This project involves the careful alteration of a traditional Victorian sandstone semi-detached house, balancing original character with contemporary intervention.
The design focuses on the transformation of the rear of the property, where a series of constrained service spaces were removed to establish a more generous and coherent layout. The existing roof was reconfigured to raise the eaves level, creating a single, expansive kitchen volume defined by increased height and a strong sense of openness.
A bespoke steel stair replaces the original external stair flight, introducing a refined contemporary element. The cantilevered upper landing emphasises lightness and precision, forming a subtle architectural focal point at the garden interface.
Materially restrained and carefully composed, the intervention offers a clear yet respectful contrast to the existing sandstone fabric—reframing the house for modern living while preserving its underlying character.
