Set within the foothills of the Campsie Fells, this contemporary manager’s house is designed to combine high-quality modern living with the everyday operational needs of an established fishery. Positioned at the eastern edge of the Woodburn Reservoir, the house enjoys expansive views across the water while enabling constant oversight and management of the site.
The design draws inspiration from traditional 19th-century farmsteads, reinterpreted through a simple, contemporary language. A series of three linked volumes form a sheltered courtyard, creating a private external space while opening towards the surrounding hills. The building is carefully embedded into the landscape, aligning with existing stone dyke boundaries to reinforce the area’s historic field pattern.
A restrained palette of natural materials—including slate, timber and large areas of glazing—ensures the house sits comfortably within its rural setting while providing durability and warmth. South-facing elevations maximise daylight and passive solar gain, supporting a sustainable, low-energy approach.
The result is a distinctive yet sensitive home: one that supports the working landscape, respects its context, and delivers a timeless, modern dwelling rooted in place.
